We take emergencies! ⚠️

emergency chiro

For many people, the thought of going to the chiropractor conjures up long-term treatments. However, we at Chiro du Portage take emergency appointments, which can relieve pain and other short-term symptoms.

These appointments are used to treat people who have had an accident or are in sudden pain.

Although not a long-term solution, emergency treatment can provide much-needed relief when other treatments have failed.

Also, it can be a great way to start recovery if you’re not sure you want to commit to regular chiropractic care. If you are suffering from pain or other symptoms, emergency chiropractic may be the answer you are looking for.

At the Clinique Chiropratique du Portage , we are available for emergency appointments. Our chiropractors, Dr. Patrick and Dr. Émilie, will do everything possible to take care of you as quickly as possible.

What is a chiropractic emergency?

This is when your quality of life is greatly affected. The pain prevents you from going about your day.

Are you limited in your work or in your daily activities? If so, it’s time to consult a health care professional. Don’t wait for your body to compensate with harmful movements or positions.

Your initial problem will then be complicated by muscle tension and inflammation.

Chiropractors are trained to identify and treat these conditions, and have a duty to refer patients to the appropriate health care professionals if necessary.

Chiropractors may also provide emergency care themselves. This may include splinting or stabilizing a fracture, pulling a herniated disc or performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Although chiropractic emergencies are rare, it is important to be aware of them and know how to get the proper care if necessary.

What types of emergencies do we see most often in our offices?

Torticollis

Have you ever woken up one morning with neck pain that prevents you from turning your head in one direction?

If so, it could be a torticollis. There are several different types of torticollis: acute, traumatic, spasmodic and congenital. Through a detailed physical examination, the chiropractor is trained to diagnose the type of torticollis you have.

Once the cause of your pain has been determined, the chiropractor will be able to provide proper management.

If your torticollis is caused by a muscle spasm, a facet irritation or a herniated disc, the chiropractor will give you treatments and recommendations adapted to your condition.

Lumbar sprains or pinched sciatic nerves

Did you lift too heavy a load? Did you twist too quickly? Do you feel that your back is “locked up”? Do you have numbness in one of your legs?

All of these symptoms can occur when you have a lumbar sprain or when one of your lower back nerves gets caught between your vertebrae.

Through a detailed physical examination, the chiropractor will be able to determine the cause of your symptoms.

If your condition falls within the chiropractor’s scope of practice, he or she will be able to offer you treatment.

BEWARE of these symptoms!

If you have a high fever, generalized malaise, loss of genital sensation, unexplained weight loss, night sweats or sudden fractures, emergency medical attention is strongly recommended.

These symptoms may be signs of a serious underlying condition that requires immediate treatment.

If you have a high fever, it may be a sign of an infection or other medical problem. Loss of sensation in the genitals may be a sign of nerve damage or disease. Unexplained weight loss can be a sign of many underlying health problems, such as thyroid problems, diabetes or malnutrition. Finally, sudden fractures can occur due to loss of bone density, often seen in people with osteoporosis.

If you experience any of these symptoms, don’t delay in seeking emergency medical help.

What treatments do we offer in an emergency?

When you first see a chiropractor, he/she will begin with an initial examination.

This is to determine if your condition is due to problems with the bones, muscles or nerves in your spine or other parts of your body.

If it is determined that your problem is neuro-musculo-skeletal in nature, the chiropractor will develop a treatment plan to relieve pain and restore normal function.

If this is the case for you, here is what can be done in more detail.

Chiropractic adjustments/mobilizations

Adjustment is the therapeutic act of choice for chiropractors.

It is characterized by a high speed, low amplitude impulse performed with the hands at the level of the joints, in a given vector in order to restore mobility to the segment.

The chiropractor has studied for 5 years at the University in order to produce a good and safe adjustment for the patients.

The chiropractor can also do mobilizations of your different joints.

During this maneuver, there is no impulse. It is simply small movements performed with the hands in order to restore mobility.

SpineMed neuro-vertebral decompression table

The SpineMed decompression table is ideal for people with lumbar sprains, herniated discs, osteoarthritis, pinched nerves and more.

This table is controlled by a computer equipped with sensors.

The treatment lasts 30 minutes. This table gently stretches the vertebrae in order to free the disc and release the muscular pressure. This table is approved by Health Canada.

Postural tips and exercises

At the clinic, our chiropractors give you exercises and postural advice to help you adopt a better posture.

It is important to be aware of your posture and to make the necessary corrections. Good posture is essential to maintaining a healthy spine.

When you sit or stand with good posture, your bones are properly aligned and your muscles can work efficiently. This reduces the strain on your spine and helps prevent pain and injury.

Unfortunately, poor posture is becoming more common as people spend more and more time hunched over their computers or phones.

If you are suffering from back pain or poor posture, our chiropractors can help. We will assess your posture and develop a treatment plan to improve your alignment.

This plan may include exercises, stretching and lifestyle changes. With our help, you can achieve healthier posture and enjoy long-term spinal health.

We have a digital X-ray on site

Digital radiography provides instant, high-quality images.

When patients arrive at our clinic in an emergency, we can quickly access the radiograph. Our patients avoid a lot of waiting, which can help save time in an emergency situation.

What X-rays allow us to do

  • Exclude possible underlying pathology
  • View the alignment of the spine
  • Screen for osteoarthritis, scoliosis, fracture or dislocation
  • Quantify the curves of the spine

During your visit, the chiropractor will determine if it is recommended to take x-rays depending on your condition.
