Facet Syndrome: Understanding and Relieving Joint Pain in the Spine

The human body stands out for its remarkable ability to adapt, live, and move. Thanks to our nerves, tendons, muscles, and especially our spine, we can enjoy our favorite sports activities, such as running, walking, skiing, or skating.

But what happens when we neglect to take care of our bodies? They deteriorate and may develop illnesses, syndromes, and pains that spread to various parts of the body.

Among the most common chronic health issues in Canada, lower back pain ranks first, affecting 4 out of 5 adults at least once in their lives.

Facet syndrome is one of the conditions that can cause long-term pain if not addressed promptly. Chiropractic care has proven to be an effective way to understand and treat facet syndrome.

What is Facet Syndrome?

Facet syndrome is characterized by inflammation in one or more facet joints. Each vertebra has 4 facets: 2 that connect with the vertebra above and 2 that connect with the one below. These facets are covered with a very smooth and soft cartilage that is constantly lubricated, allowing the vertebrae to glide freely during movement.

The facet joints form the posterior part of the vertebrae; they act as guides for vertebral movements, unlike the vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs, which are designed to support weight.

A study shows that between 15% and 40% of patients with chronic back pain experience pain related to facet syndrome (including the cervical region).

The Most Common Causes of Facet Syndrome

Pain typically results from a sudden wrong movement or prolonged poor posture. Facet syndrome develops due to friction between the facet joints, leading to inflammation and the degradation of the cartilage and ligaments that support the joints.

Other factors can also contribute to the onset of facet irritation, such as:

  • Repetitive movements, especially lumbar extensions, which place excessive stress on the facet joints.
  • Friction between the facets, often caused by improper posture or previous injuries.
  • Trauma such as falls or accidents that damage or irritate the facet joints.
  • Osteoarthritis and normal joint wear and tear with age, which can degrade cartilage.
  • Poor posture maintained over long periods, increasing pressure on the joints.
  • Excess body weight, adding additional pressure on the spine and joints.
  • Sports activities involving explosive movements or impacts.

All these factors, combined with age, weight, and excessive physical activity, can contribute to the irritation and pain associated with facet syndrome.

What Are the Most Common Symptoms of Facet Syndrome?

Facet syndrome presents a variety of symptoms that can significantly impact quality of life. Lower back pain is the most common symptom, often localized around the facet joints and sometimes radiating to the buttocks or thighs. Affected individuals may experience stiffness, especially after prolonged periods of rest or sleep, making morning movements difficult. Performing extension movements, such as bending backward, can intensify the pain.

These symptoms can lead to muscle fatigue and limitations in daily activities. It is essential to consult a chiropractor or healthcare professional promptly to ensure proper management and prevent the condition from worsening.

Who Can Develop Facet Syndrome?

Facet syndrome can affect anyone, regardless of age. It typically results from an injury to the cartilage of the facet joint but can also be caused by excessive movements, particularly extensions and rotations. Therefore, facet syndrome can impact not only those engaged in intense physical activities but also individuals with poor posture or who perform repetitive movements daily.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help Relieve Facet Syndrome Pain?

Facet syndrome can have many underlying causes and manifest in various ways. Chiropractic care offers solutions that may alleviate symptoms and improve the quality of life for those affected. This natural, safe, and effective approach focuses on addressing mechanical issues such as facet syndrome.

Chiropractic care aims to correct imbalances in the musculoskeletal system, which are often responsible for neck and lower back pain. Through precise spinal adjustments, chiropractors can realign the vertebrae and relieve inflamed facet joints. These targeted adjustments can reduce pressure on the joints and improve mobility.

Here are the techniques most frequently used by our chiropractors to relieve facet syndrome:

  • Chiropractic adjustments
  • Neuro-vertebral decompression table therapy
  • Specific exercises

Recommended Exercises to Relieve Facet Syndrome

Here are some simple exercises you can do at home to alleviate pain associated with facet syndrome:

  • Lumbar Stretching Exercises: These helps maintain flexibility in the lumbar spine and relieve stiffness. Examples include the cat-cow stretch, where you alternately arch and round your back.
  • Low-Impact Aerobic Exercises: Activities like walking, swimming, or cycling are excellent options. These exercises do not place excessive pressure on the facet joints.
  • Flexibility and Mobility Exercises: Gentle exercises that promote spinal mobility, such as yoga, can help maintain the flexibility of the facet joints and reduce stiffness.
  • Core Strengthening: Strengthening the abdominal and lumbar muscles helps stabilize the spine and reduce pressure on the facet joints. Sit-ups, planks, and bridges are good examples of exercises to strengthen the core.
