Feet, Posture, and Back Pain: The Role of Chiropractic Care

Our feet, often overlooked, actually form the foundation of our posture and overall health. With 26 bones in each foot, they support our entire body, absorb shocks, and facilitate our daily movements. Every step we take, whether walking or running, is closely connected to this complex joint. However, improper foot positioning or imbalance can compromise body alignment, leading to compensations in the knees, pelvis, and spine. Over time, these imbalances can cause chronic back pain.

At Chiro du Portage, we believe that the key to good posture and optimal alignment largely lies in the health of your feet. Our comprehensive chiropractic approach aims to assess and correct foot positioning to restore body balance. By addressing the root of the problem, we help prevent and treat many back pains related to poor posture or biomechanical misalignment.

The Anatomy of the Foot

The foot plays a crucial role in locomotion and body support. It is a true masterpiece of biological engineering, composed of a complex architecture that allows precise mobility while ensuring stability.

This stability directly contributes to good posture and body alignment. Poor foot positioning can lead to compensations that affect the entire body, sometimes resulting in back pain.

The Bones of the Foot

The foot is divided into three main sections, each consisting of several distinct bones:

  • The Tarsus: Composed of seven bones, among which the talus and the calcaneus are the most notable. These bones form the rear part of the foot, including the ankle and heel, and play an essential role in supporting the body’s weight.
  • The Metatarsus: Consisting of five long bones called metatarsals, this section forms the middle part of the foot. These bones connect the tarsus to the phalanges, allowing force transfer during walking.
  • Phalanges: These are the toe bones. The big toe has two phalanges, while the others have three. These bones are fundamental for mobility, balance, and propulsion during walking or running.

Muscles and Tendons

The muscles of the foot are divided into two categories:

  • Extrinsic Muscles: Originating in the lower part of the leg, they extend to the foot to control larger movements, such as walking or running. Among them, the tibialis anterior plays a key role in stability.
  • Intrinsic Muscles: Located entirely within the foot, these muscles ensure precision in fine movements, arch stability, and the ability to adapt the position of the foot on various surfaces.

The tendons, particularly the Achilles tendon, connect these muscles to the bones and allow for propulsion and stability during weight-bearing.

An Essential Architecture for Daily Balance

The integrity of this complex structure of the foot is fundamental for maintaining stable posture, ensuring proper foot positioning, absorbing shocks, and allowing efficient locomotion. Even minor alterations or injuries can affect body alignment, leading to imbalances often manifested as back pain or other functional discomforts. Chiropractic care acknowledges the importance of this foundation in maintaining overall health and quality of life on a daily basis.

Common Foot Problems and Their Effects on Posture

Several common conditions can disturb the balance of your feet and impact your overall body health:

  • Plantar Fasciitis: Inflammation of the fascia (connective tissue under the foot) causing pain under the foot and in the heel. Chiropractic care can help relieve muscle and joint tension, reducing pain and promoting faster recovery.
  • Flat Foot: Collapse of the arch can lead to poor stability and pain, especially when combined with poor posture. As chiropractors, we often refer to a podiatrist for specialized advice to determine if orthotics are recommended to support the arch, improve walking, and help realign the body.
  • Arthritis: Chronic joint inflammation can affect the foot, causing pain, stiffness, and deformity, especially in the toes. Gout, a specific form of arthritis caused by crystal buildup of uric acid—often in the big toe—can trigger sudden episodes of intense pain, swelling, and redness, which may limit walking and cause postural compensations. These pains can interfere with walking, promote compensatory posture, and contribute to back pain and other imbalances.

  • Joint Dysfunction: Mechanical imbalances in the foot can impact the knees, hips, and even the back. By evaluating these movements, our chiropractors can make precise adjustments to restore balance.

For example, a posture where the knee is in varus (knees bow outward) or valgus (knees bow inward) can overload muscles and joints, affecting the entire vertical alignment of the body. Correcting these imbalances through precise adjustments can reduce tension and improve overall posture.

  • Sport Injuries: Sprains, fractures, or muscle strains in the foot can hinder performance or cause chronic pain. If not treated promptly, these injuries may lead to mechanical compensations, especially in the back, potentially causing back or neck pain. It is therefore essential to treat any foot injury quickly to prevent secondary problems and maintain optimal alignment.

Maintaining Daily Health with Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care goes beyond relieving back pain or sciatica. It also plays a vital role in assessing and optimizing the biomechanics of your feet and body, whether you are a child, adult, or senior.

Your chiropractor can analyze your gait, identify imbalances, and recommend tailored treatments. Correcting misalignments in the feet, combined with specific exercises and advice on appropriate footwear, can significantly improve your overall posture.

A Team-Based Approach for Optimal Health

At Chiro du Portage, we firmly believe that taking care of your foot health and posture should be a collaborative effort. Chiropractic professionals work closely with other healthcare providers, such as podiatrists. We often refer patients for in-depth evaluations, especially in cases of significant deformities or specific pathologies. Conversely, many professionals send their patients to us for chiropractic expertise—whether for adjustments, biomechanical assessments, or spinal evaluations.

This teamwork ensures comprehensive, personalized care aimed at your overall health. As chiropractors, we recognize when referrals are necessary based on each case’s specific needs and collaborate with other professionals to deliver safe and effective treatments.

Your foot health is fundamental to your posture, mobility, and daily comfort. Daily activities—potentially involving 10,000 steps or more—place significant demands on your bones and muscles. Maintaining their integrity is crucial. We are here to evaluate, adjust, and advise you to achieve proper alignment and prevent long-term issues such as back pain or other discomforts linked to poor foot biomechanics.

If you experience foot pain, discomfort, or visible imbalances, don’t hesitate to discuss these with your chiropractor during your next visit. Professional, personalized follow-up can make a real difference in restoring your balance, enhancing your quality of life, and safeguarding your health over the long term.
