Your first chiropractic appointment may raise several questions: What should you bring? What should you wear? What does the assessment involve? Will treatment be offered at the first visit?
This guide walks you through the steps of a first consultation at our clinic, Chiropratique du Portage. Our goal is to help you arrive well prepared and understand what to expect, from your welcome at reception to the explanation of next steps. Each consultation is tailored to your situation in a caring, professional and pressure-free environment.
Before your appointment: information to prepare
Before your visit, take a few minutes to think about your reason for seeking care and how your condition has developed. You do not need to put together a detailed file: a few specific details will help us better understand your situation.
If possible, make a note of the following:
- where you feel pain, stiffness, tension or limited movement;
- when the discomfort began and the circumstances surrounding its onset;
- movements, positions or activities that make it worse or better;
- relevant injuries, accidents, surgeries or health conditions in your medical history;
- treatments, exercises or other approaches you have already tried;
- medications and supplements you take;
- your daily activities, work, sports and sleep habits;
- your goals, such as better understanding your discomfort, improving your mobility or returning to certain activities.
This information helps us build a more complete picture of your neuromusculoskeletal health and the demands that may affect your day-to-day comfort.
What to bring to your first consultation
Here are a few useful things to bring with you on the day of your appointment:
- Relevant health documents: if you have them, bring recent imaging reports, test results or notes from another healthcare professional related to your reason for seeking care.
- Your list of medications and supplements: include their names and, if possible, dosages.
- A list of questions: write them down on your phone or on paper so you do not forget anything during your visit.
If you do not have some of these documents, you can still book an appointment. Our team can let you know whether any additional information would be helpful.
What should you wear?
Choose comfortable, flexible clothing that allows you to move easily. Athletic or casual clothing generally works well. If possible, avoid very stiff clothing, bulky belts or accessories that could interfere with the assessment of your posture and movement.
Depending on the area being examined, your chiropractor may give you additional instructions while respecting your comfort, privacy and consent.
What happens during your first chiropractic visit?
The exact course of your first visit may vary depending on your reason for seeking care, your health history and the clinical findings. The appointment generally includes three main steps.
1. Welcome and health history
When you arrive, our team will welcome you and give you forms to complete. You will then meet with one of our two chiropractors.
The consultation begins with a discussion of your health, symptoms, activities and goals. This step, known as history taking, helps your chiropractor better understand your situation.
Your chiropractor may ask about when your discomfort began, how it has changed over time, the factors that affect it, and your relevant medical and family history. The goal is to gather the information needed to guide the assessment and determine the appropriate course of action.
2. Physical examination
Depending on your situation, the examination may include observing your posture, assessing joint mobility and performing certain orthopaedic or neurological tests. The examinations performed are tailored to your age, health and reason for seeking care.
Your chiropractor will explain the main steps of the assessment. You can ask questions, report any discomfort or ask for a test to be stopped at any time.
The clinic also has digital X-ray equipment on site. It is used only when your health history and clinical assessment indicate that imaging is necessary.
3. Explanation of findings and next steps
At the end of the visit, your chiropractor will explain their findings in clear language. Depending on the results of the evaluation, the discussion may cover:
- the findings observed during the examination;
- the care options that may be suitable for your situation;
- the goals and limitations of the proposed approach;
- advice related to posture, movement, or ergonomics;
- the relevance of follow-up or reassessment;
- the need to consult a physician or another healthcare professional if your situation falls outside the scope of chiropractic care or requires further evaluation.
When an option such as a chiropractic adjustment or, in certain situations, SpineMed spinal decompression is being considered, its relevance is assessed based on your condition and the results of the evaluation.
Your consent remains essential
Before any care is provided, you must receive the information needed to make an informed decision. Your chiropractor will explain the nature of the proposed intervention, its goals, possible effects, limitations, and other relevant options.
You are free to ask questions, request time to reflect, accept or decline an intervention, and withdraw your consent. No care plan is undertaken without your agreement.
After the first visit
The next steps depend on your needs and the results of the evaluation. A follow-up appointment may be suggested to continue the evaluation, discuss a care plan, or monitor how your situation evolves. The frequency and duration of any follow-up care are explained transparently and may be reassessed over time.
